Roswell, New Mexico

Roswell New Mexico (Chaves County) is located in Southeastern New Mexico and covers 6,090 square miles. The county is very rural being located almost 200 miles away from any large metropolitan area. The population of Chaves County is 61,382 an increase of only 6.1 % from 1990, which also includes; Dexter, Hagerman, Lake Arthur. The major industry for the area is agricultural; comprised of 68 dairies and numerous farms and ranches. Roswell’s an intriguing combination of the old west, the contemporary and the future; the natural world and the manmade environment, the frontier town and the city where dreams of space flight were realized.
A tour through Roswell’s cultural circuit takes you through five distinctive museums including two art and two historical museums, and the world-renown International UFO Museum featuring the 1947 Roswell Incident time line, and 11,000 feet of other exhibits chronicling the alien enigma. Eastern New Mexico University- Roswell is home to one of the few certified aviation programs in the Southwest United States. We are also home to the International Law Enforcement Academy; providing law enforcement training to different countries and nations around the world. Roswell is also home to the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) a state sponsored military high school and junior college with about 2,000 students enrolled.
Just about everyone has heard of Roswell because of the “incident”. Was it a weather balloon or a UFO that crashed? Annually approximately 250,000 UFO enthusiasts come to Roswell from all over the world to explore the memorabilia.
Roswell is most known for its “Bottomless Lake”! In 1933 the bottomless lakes area was set aside as New Mexico’s first state park. Lea Lake is the deepest at 90 feet and is the only lake where swimming is allowed. The lake’s greenish-blue color creates the illusion that the lakes are bottomless, but they range in dept from 17ft to 90 ft. The park is located at an elevation of 3,500 ft. and covers 1,400 acres of land.
Recreational opportunities at Bottomless Lakes include camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, sailing, and wildlife viewing. The Park also has a trail system open to hiking and site seeing.
